George Washington received a gift of animals from his good friend the Marquis de Lafayette. When the rare pheasants died, he sent them to the artist Charles Willson Peale to use in a natural history museum in Philadelphia. The pheasants can now be seen at the Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology.

Ring-necked pheasants were introduced into North America in 1881....Before long, the pheasant population spread throughout Oregon. Pheasants are not native to the United States. They were imported from China in the late 19th century. People sometimes hunt these beautiful wild birds. Rich people hunted them in England, and hungry poor people would sometimes sneak in and hunt peasants at night. These grassland birds eat and hide on the ground. They can only fly a little. They look like colorful chickens with long tail feathers. Pheasants are also eaten by foxes and coyotes.
